Play of Light

I have been wanting to tell you for over a week now, but Ian insisted I wait and devote a whole post to my exciting news. So here it is... I got a new camera! Have you noticed the photos in my last few posts are a little clearer? Those backgrounds are a little blurred?

I ended up going with the basic entry level Canon 1000D (or rebel XS in the states). Ian and I have mostly been shooting on auto, but are trying to play with the manual settings too. I think I may do a short course somewhere, does anyone have any recommendations? I feel as though I should have some basic understanding of my camera first.

These aren't really the greatest photos to show off my new camera. The sun was about to set, but gave a good blast of harsh light to end the day. It is pretty tough in winter to find time on weekdays for photos while the sun is still up!

Outfit Details:
Dress - vintage possibly from Q's Daydream Vintage (but I can't remember!)
tights - tights please
shoes - gentle soul
cardi - k-mart
hair bow - Ian's bow tie

  1. Awesome shots! That first one is a real stunner and your dress is gorgeous :)

To be honest I rarely bother with manual. Have a play with the AV setting though, for some extra blur you can set your aperture to the smallest available (e.g. f4.2) in AV mode. Other than that I usually run my camera on P as well and just mess with the little darker/lighter bar in the settings depending on the weather.

With the amount of bloggers using Canon EOS cameras I've been wondering about posting some tips because honestly there isn't that much to learn. Once you got it set up to your liking it's pretty much point and shoot from there :D

  3. What a lovely dress, and what a stunning clifftop background!

Albs and I are kind of "experiment/read tips until you figure it out" people. I started taking a course in Mexico, but it was total nonsense so I quit. ; )

I saw this article on IFB the other day though. Maybe it'll be a good start.

P.S. Re: pumpkins... I'm no expert. There's generally big and orange in Canada, hehe. More like the States than Oz, I'd assume. ; D

  4. Such a cute dress. I love the all scotish feeling to it, and the bow. And oh, everyoen seems to have that camera, I only have my digital camera to take photos with.

  9. I'm finding that shooting right at sunset is one of the best times to take pictures. Pictures taken during that time have a great feel to them if you can get the lighting to work for you. I usually shoot directly into it, but there's always trees that filter the light so my picture actually turns out. Congrats on the camera! I've had a Rebel since I've been 16 and I love it. But I've had one for five years and STILL don't know everything about it!
